COLLABORATION WITH MARCO GANZ

Film: SUNRISE TO SUNSET - 1.45 mins

The film “Sunrise to Sunset” reflects the experience of an exclusive art edition on the subject of colour by Marco Ganz and the revolutionary RGB printing technique invented by Lorenz Boegli.

When I ran into Marco at a gallery opening in Zurich, he mentioned a new project he was working on with RGB printing, a technique of “printing light”. In my artistic practice and research, I probe questions about experience, what we see and once we see it, how it influences us. Immediately intrigued to hear more about this print of light, we set up a studio visit. Seeing the Red, Green and Blue screen print for the first time, I was fascinated with the subtle changes in colour as the light shifted in the room. Prompted with curiosity, I moved around the room to view the work from different angles, noticing how the shifts became even more noticeable. I expected that there might be even more differences through changes in light temperature and intensity and proposed to do an experiment compressing time. I designed control sequences to test how temperature and intensity affected what was seen.

The resulting “Sunrise to Sunset” film presents the subtle influences of changing light throughout a single day. The physical artwork is screen printed with red, green and blue pigments, however when light reflects on the surface, tones of yellow, orange, magenta and even white appear. The artwork does not move, but when observing as the light shifts from morning into evening the shapes visibly appear to change form, slightly shrinking and expanding with a pulsating glow.
